Which is the largest bone in our body?

Femur or the thighbone is the largest bone in our body. Also the strongest bone in the body, this bone accounts for almost a third of our hight. A 1.5 metres tall man has about 0.5 metres long femur.

It is joined to the pelvic girdle on the upper side and two bones namely Tibia and Fibia on the lower side.


Which is the smallest bone?

Our middle ear has three bones, namely Hammer, Anvil and Stirrup.
These bones receive the sound vibrations from the outer ear and magnify these vibrations and pass them to the fluid of the inner ear.

Stirrup is the smallest bone in our body. It is only 3mm long and weights about 3mg.


Why do you have ribs?

The ribs form a cage around the heart and lungs and provide them protection against an injury. The ribcage extends from the flat bone in the middle of the chest to the spines at the back.

The ribs swing up and down when we breathe to inflate and deflate the lungs.

Why do people in old age lose their height?

As people get older, the cartilage pads present in between the bones
of the spine become thinner, leading to a loss in hight. The muscles also get weakened in old age causing people to stoop.
This also makes them took smaller. Many people above the age of 60 suffer from a condition known as osteoporsis. The bones in this condition lose some calcium and become more brittle.


Which is the Largest Muscle in our body?

The Largest muscle in our body is the gluteus maximus. It runs from  the buttock to the back of the thigh. During pregnancy this muscular structure increases to a large extent in females.
The uterus increases in weight from 30 gm to more than one kilogram.

Which is the most active muscle?
The eye muscle is the most active muscle, moves more than 100,000 times a day. The movements largely take place when one is dreaming. The heart muscle keeps contracting 70 or more times a minute. The smooth muscle in the gut movesall the time.


Why is it hard to breathe on mountains?
High up in the mountains, The air gets thinner. In other worlds, the oxygen intake per breath decreases. Brething gets difficult since the person has to breathe more to get the requried amount of oxygen needed by the body.
This can be compared to the situation when one breaths more after exercise. Exercise demands more supply of oxygen and the person pants to take in more air.
