Who were the first land animals?


The animals first to appear on land were invertebrates or the animals without backbones. They were either soft (Jellyfish) or shelled (Trilobites). The first vertebrates (The ones with backone) were fish.

The first creatures to move to the land were the ancestors of today's insects and spiders. They fed on the first land plants and also on one another. Then came the amphibian-animals that can live both on land and water. Appearing about 900 million years ago, amphibians probably developed from fish that crawled out of water and breathed 
air.

Which were the most fearsome dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs were a group of reptiles which lived on earth for 160 million years (225-265 million years ago.) Some of these reptiles were vegetarians, while some were flesh eaters.
The most terrible of the meat-eating dinosaurs were creatures, Such as Allosaurus, Which lived in Jurassic times (180-130 million years ago) 
And Tyrannosaurus Rex of  the Cretaceous Period (130-65 million years ago). These animals were up to 12meters long and their jaws were lined with razor-sharpe teeth. Some other meat eating dinosaurs had huge, knife-like claws.


Which is the fastest animal?


Cheetah is the fastest animal in the world. With its streamlined and supple body and long legs, A cheetah can run at a speed of over 100km per hour.
But cheetah cannot run for very long, Because it doesn't have much
stamina. It preys upon hares, small antelopes and birds. It hunts alone or in Pairs.


How do Indian and Affrican elephants differ?

Both Indian and African elephants have larger ears which help them to keep cool in the hot african climate. The Indian elephant is smaller. It has a humped back and its tusks are shorter.
African elephants are inhabitants of grassy plains.
They dwell in jungles and cannot be tamed. Indian elephants can be 
tamed and trained to lift tree trunks and loads.


Why do mammals have hair?

The primary function of hair on a mammal's body is to provide warmth. But the hair on some mammals have modified to perform other functions. Hedgehogs have modified stiffened hair to provide them with protection.
Some animlas have coloured hair to help camouflage themselves and, thus, protect themselves from predators. Some stiffened hair, like a cat's whiskers, are very sensitive to touch. Hair on human body do not have much importance.


Why do deers graze in large herds?


Deers are grazing animals that are in constant danger of being preyed upon by predators. They remain in large herds to seek safety. While the herd is grazing, Some members of the herd keep an  eye on the surroundings and on seeing a predator,
They raise an alarm. When a predator tries to attack a herd, he gets confused by many animals running in all directions.


Which animal is also known as river horse?

Hippopotamus or Hippo, an African animal is also known as river horse. It is a huge and heavy animal that is, in fact, related to pigs and not to horses. It lives near rivers and lakes and spends most of its time in the water.
It has very fearsome teeth, but hippo is a pure vegetarian animal and feeds on water weeds and grasses. It comes to the shore at night to feed. Hippo has eyes on the top of its head so that when it stands in the water, it can peep out without being seen.
It can stand submerged for breath. It is not a dangerous animal, but when disturbed, it can cause serious injuries with its tusks from the lower jaws.


What are marsupials?


Marsupials are animals with pouches, such as kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots,koalas and opossums. All these animals are natives of Australia (Except for American opossum). A marsupial gives birth to its young one, when the baby is still very small.

The Baby crawls through the mother's fur into a pouch where it feeds on mother's milk. It stays there for quite some time until it is big enough to look after itself. There are about 250 species of marsupials.


When do skunks smell?
Skunk is a mammal found in North America. It is quite a harmeless animal and it is not smelly itself. When the animal feels threatened, it ejects a very foul smelling liquid.
This smell is so repulsive that it can temporarily stop its victim from breathing. The liquid is given out fom a gland under the tail of the skunk. If another animal is hit by this liquid, the smell clings to its fur for days. Skunk feeds on a varity of things like insects, rats,mice,birds,eggs and plants. It feeds at night and sleeps in burrows during the day.

Why Do tigers have stripes?
Tigers are the biggest members of the cat family. They live in the jungle of Asia and South-east asia and hunt deer or large cattle. The tigers usually lie still during the day and prefer to hunt at dusk.

Its coast is striped to make it blend easily with the surrounding vegetation. This makes it almost invisible, when it stalks its prey. It usually remains hidden in the vigetation near water holes where other animals come to drink water and are easily preyed upon by the tiger.
